Full-day Chalki Island boat trip and Butterfly Valley visit

4.1/5
830 reviews

Variety is the name of the game on this trip which showcases the contrasting sides of Rhodes. Get back to nature at the renowned Butterfly Valley nature reserve, before a visit to the completely unspoilt and sleepy island of Chalki. "The appeal of Chalki is its laid-back vibe," says Maria, one of our expert local guides. "Most families here still know every boat in the harbour - island life doesn't get much simpler than this.”

Journey to Rhodes's fertile interior in the morning, headed to the ecological sanctuary that is Butterfly Valley. Walk under the canopy of the forest, alongside waterfalls and ponds rich in wildlife. From mid-June to mid-September this is home to hundreds of thousands of Callimorpha butterflies, attracted by the resin of its storax trees. They make for quite the spectacle. “Most visitors know Rhodes for its beaches, but the island's heart is green, cool and surprisingly wild,” adds Maria.

Afterwards, it's back to the coast where you'll board your boat to Chalki. This sleepy island has pretty houses scattered around the harbour where small fishing boats are moored. Take a walk around and enjoy this idyllic getaway and get a feel for traditional Greek island living. There'll also be time for a refreshing afternoon swim in Chalki's clear waters.

Unlike other trips the rep didn't provide any information about the areas we travelled through and very little about the actual places visited. The Butterfly Valley was well worth visiting but the Chalki island visit felt it was tacked on to make a day trip up. It was way too long, the rep provided very little by way of information about the island and we ended up sitting around awaiting the return boat

The Pondamos beach was billed as a sandy beach, but the wind was blowing and there was no beach just manmade terraces with sun loungers. Nick's taverna was a good place for lunch though. The other nearby beach had beautiful clear water and snorkelling opportunities with loungers available but for 2 hours not really worth it. We just found a slice of shade near a restaurant and spent time in the sea.

We were late to the pick up bus by 3 minutes and the driver didn’t wait for us. We were told that there was no availability to reschedule despite us being around for the whole next week on the island. And no refund was given either. Absolutely disappointed with the approach and treatment of the customers.

The visit to the butterfly Valley was disappointing only one species. The Chalki island was pretty but didn't need 5 hours free time as not much to do. Very disappointing as an excursion.. Times too long - 12 hours in total, as waste of a days holiday.

The trip was sold as 8 hours but it was 12 hours for me…the coach left my hotel at 8.15am and the return boat back from Chalki left at 5.30pm getting me back to my hotel just before 8pm. The Butterfly Valley was missold…the Jersey Tiger is a moth not a butterfly and that was the only species. I was hoping for much more. There were too many coach parties there which made the visit unenjoyable, Chalki Islands was the highlight of my day. Boat trip was fine and Ftenaga beach was very pleasurable.
