Ancient Luxor with solar eclipse of the century from Marsa Alam

You probably already know Luxor as home to the world’s finest examples of ancient Egyptian architecture, but for one special day in August 2027, you’ll need to look to the skies for its star attraction. The total solar eclipse will last for around six minutes, and Luxor is one of the world’s best places to watch it. Local guide Ayoub, explains, “This is going to be the solar eclipse of the century, and there’s no setting more magical for it. Get ready for history and the cosmos to come together in perfect harmony.”

Leaving Marsa Alam at dawn, you’ll start your visit on the east bank of the Nile at Luxor Temple, dating back to 1400 BC. Gigantic sloping sandstone walls will greet you, leading to courtyards of soaring columns. Collect your jaw from the floor and gather on the iconic Avenue of the Sphinxes for the main event – the eclipse. Watch daylight soften and fade, as the moon obscures the sun. Ayoub reassuringly adds, “Luxor’s desert climate means there’s little chance of pesky clouds spoiling your view of this spectacular celestial event.”

Regain your composure over lunch, then cross the Nile by motorboat to reach the west bank. Get some snaps of the imposing Colossi of Memnon – the two sandstone giants who’ve been standing guard over ancient Thebes for millennia. Then head to the Valley of the Kings to see the royal tombs and learn about the history and beliefs of the pharaohs. Your final stop celebrates one of ancient Egypt’s few female rulers, Hatshepsut. Framed by the sheer cliffs of Deir el-Bahari, the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut makes a lasting impression with its symmetrical design and elegant terraces. You can reflect on a day of wow-worthy moments on your return to Marsa Alam.
