Grossglockner Scenic Tour

4.7/5
55 reviews

With a snowy summit scraping the sky, the Grossglockner is one impressive alpine peak. Venture to the base of Austria's highest mountain for a chance to meet marmots, hit the museum or just take in grandstand views across the landscape.

Journey through green pastures and rolling hills and you'll make the steady climb towards the base of Austria's highest peak – the Grossglockner. Arrive almost 2000m above sea level to enjoy striking views across the landscape and the chance to learn fascinating facts on the mountain's past, present and future in the museum. And if you're lucky, you may even spot a marmot or two – oversized squirrel creatures that call these parts home.

Afterwards, you'll wind your way deeper through High Tauern National Park – there's over 300 peaks alone here, as well as alpine scenery that mirrors classic film The Sound of Music. Along the way, you'll stop off at a café for an Austrian favourite, coffee and cake.

Great day out. Being in the mountains the weather can be changeable and we arrived at first stop with limited views due fog/clouds. However travelling on towards our final destination the sun came out and the view is spectacular. We went early July so be prepared for temperature and dress accordingly. Get a good weather app for the mountains to check temperature. Georg was a great guide. We followed him for an optional short easy walk and were rewarded with seeing marmots close up.

We loved the trip to such a beautiful area, the guide was very good except for the final stop to what he said was the best place to eat strudel, this was a real let down as this was a mass produced strudel and definitely not very good, such a shame as Austria has some amazing strudel.

We booked the trip because the weather was so good, we had already been on the same trip 30 years before and it was a horrible grey day ,so this one was guaranteed to be clear skies and spectacular scenery, it didn't disappoint, the whole day was great with George continually giving us information in a funny and positive way ,I would definitely recommend this trip

Pick up close to hotel. Comfy bus with working air conditioning. Quite a few people to pick up over a large area before the main journey. Didn't really mind this as you get to see other towns on the way. We had three stops at main viewing points/ visitor centres and a fair amount of time to look around. Older people may have struggled to get as round in time. We decided to look at the natural beauty of the place rather than the exhibitions and really enjoyed it.
