Chamula and Zinacantan indigenous villages cultural tour from San Cristóbal de las Casas

Let a guide navigate and translate for you on a day trip to two indigenous villages in Chiapas. On walking tours of each town, gain an understanding of indigenous culture and tradition you won’t find in guidebooks. After visiting an artisan market, sit down with a local family for a meal of fresh tortillas, beans, and organic coffee.

The town of San Juan Chamula, situated 10 kilometers northeast of San Cristobal de Las Casas, is the home of about 2,000 inhabitants of direct Mayan descent, proud of their heritage. You'll have a guided visit at one of their churches and the local market, getting to know the customs and religion, visiting the interior of the San Juan Bautista Church, full of rituals and millenary customs, admiring the setups in the altars and the dressing of their saint according to the indigenous customs. You’ll have a walk around the town and you’ll have time to buy artisanry and souvenirs from the region.

The next stop will be at the community of Zinacantan, famous for their hip loom, visiting the looms where we’ll enjoy a delicious mini lunch consisting of beans, organic coffee, handmade tortillas, and a typical drink from the region, everything in the company of a local family. You’ll also be able to observe the syncretism between the Catholic religion and the Mayan customs inside the Church of San Lorenzo.
