Curral das Freiras, a small parish surrounded by steep mountains, is situated in the heart of the island. It is believed that this deep valley was formed either by erosion or volcanic activity. After passing by the church of Santo António, you'll stop at the Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint, at 350 metres, where you'll enjoy the magnificent view of Funchal.

You'll then proceed through the mountains until you reach Eira do Serrado, from where you'll have an excellent view from 1,094 metres over Curral das Freiras. After visiting Curral das Freiras, you'll then return to Funchal.

Prachtig uitzicht op Curral das Freiras. We hadden wel superveel geluk met het weer: geen bewolking in de vallei waardoor we 100% open zicht hadden. Bezoek aan Curral das Freiras zelf was kort: het kerkje is het bezoeken waard, zoals alle kerken en kapellen op Madeira: prachtig geschilderd plafond. Voor de rest is daar eigenlijk niet zoveel te zien, behalve dan terug dat het dorp in een prachtige vallei gelegen is. Zeker de moeite waard omdat je maar een half dagje tijd nodig hebt.

Our guide Michael was very good. He was an excellent driver & a very knowledgeable guide. The scenery throughout was spectacular. Took us to two viewing points & then onto the Nuns Valley. We only had half hour at the village so after a quick coffee & comfort break there wasn't much time to look around. Our trip was advertised as four hours in total but was just over three hours. Unfortunately some of the passengers were not dropped back to their hotels where they were picked up from.

Enjoyed the whole experience. Benjamin the driver, had a very good knowledge and had great customer service skills. The stop at the viewpoint on the way gave a great view of Funchal. The view of the Nuns valley from the viewpoint is truly breath taking. It is a personal favourite of:mine now. Even the journey to and from the valley is spectacular. Thanks Benjamin for a great: Sunday morning experience and recommendation of where to get coffee in the village.
