2-day Zaghouan roots and heritage escape

  • 2 days + 1 night
  • All meals included
  • Light intensity
  • Rural cottage
Leave Tunisia’s coastal resorts behind and head inland to Zaghouan, where rural traditions, ancient history and mountain landscapes come together. Just an hour from the coast, this two-day escape takes you to a working farm where you’ll bake bread in a traditional clay oven and explore Roman ruins linked to the ancient water system that once supplied Carthage. Spend the night surrounded by the quiet of the Tunisian countryside before heading higher on day two to a hilltop village of stone houses and sweeping views stretching across the landscape.

Your route

What makes the night special

Staying overnight at Dar Zaghouan means experiencing life on a working farm, rather than simply visiting one. After a day spent exploring local traditions and ancient ruins, enjoy dinner prepared with ingredients grown and sourced from the surrounding land. The peaceful rural setting offers views of the Zaghouan mountains and a chance to slow down away from the bustle of the city. By morning, you’ll already be enjoying breakfast at the farm before setting off towards the hilltop villages.

Your escape into Tunisia’s countryside begins at 10 am, with pickup from your Tunis hotel or the airport before heading inland to Zaghouan. At Dar Zaghouan, a local expert introduces you to the farm through a guided walk, sharing stories of the area’s history, traditions and cultural heritage. You’ll then get involved in a hands-on seasonal workshop, which could include traditional distillation, making Kaak El Warka pastries, or baking Tabouna bread in a clay oven, depending on the time of year. After a Tunisian lunch prepared using fresh ingredients from the farm, continue to the Temple des Eaux de Zaghouan, a Roman monument that once formed part of the ancient water system supplying Carthage. Take time to explore the site and watch the sun set over the surrounding mountains before returning to the farm for dinner and your overnight stay.

After breakfast at the farm, your final day takes you further into Tunisia’s countryside with a visit to Zriba Olia, a hilltop village known for its stone houses and far-reaching views. Follow your guide through its narrow lanes and winding paths while learning about the village’s history, architecture and traditional way of life. From there, continue to Sidi Jedidi and visit Douar Laroussi, where you’ll discover traditional farming techniques and rural customs that have been passed down through generations. Enjoy lunch in a rustic countryside setting, made with fresh local ingredients, before returning to Tunis at around 3 pm.
