Ancient Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and Bardo Museum tour with lunch

4.1/5
251 reviews

Carthage was the capital of ancient Rome's greatest rival and the site of a titanic clash of civilisations. Today, its ruins bear testament to Rome's ultimate victory, as you'll discover during this tour, which also takes in Sidi Bou Said and a stop at the Bardo Museum. Mariam, one of our expert local guides, says "a good place to get your bearings in ancient Carthage is Byrsa Hill. It's a bit of a climb but the view over the archaeological site, the city and the bay are absolutely worth it."

You'll start the morning with a visit to the Bardo Museum, home to a magnificent collection of mosaics recovered from Roman villas across the region. Then, it's off to Carthage. Under renowned military leaders such as Hannibal, this site was one of the greatest powers of the classical world. Exploring with a guide gives you the historical background and the local perspective on the story of Carthage. Begin with a panoramic view of the Amphitheatre of Carthage, before continuing to Byrsa Hill, the ancient heart of the Punic city – this is where you'll catch those epic views Mariam mentioned. Then, it's on to see the Baths of Antoninus, which were among the largest thermal baths in the Roman Empire.

After a traditional Tunisian lunch, you'll visit Sidi Bou Said, a clifftop village of cobbled alleys, whitewashed houses and famous sky-blue doors and window shutters. The blue and white colour scheme has echoes of the Greek islands, and contrasts with the Mediterranean Sea beyond. You'll discover the village's history and find out why so many artists have been inspired by it over the years.

The trip itself was fantastic, but the experience was overshadowed by serious safety concerns. The bus suffered what appeared to be brake failure, leaving us stranded on a motorway in a dangerous position. Passengers were given little information and no visible safety measures were put in place while repairs were attempted. The incident caused significant anxiety and made it difficult to enjoy the rest of the excursion, especially knowing we had to return on the same bus.

Guide seemed as if he had a text book and was reading from it word for word, time on some attractions rushed while some less interesting elements had more time allocated. Lunch mediocre.

Nassir the guide was so informative and friendly that it made a very very hot day bearable and interesting. Thank you and well done because it was at least 47degrees at each stop but Raoul and Nassir looked after us. Recommend this trip!

We were given a lot of information, guide very knowledgeable but as he was guiding in 3 languages at times it became too much. Sometimes general info rather than so many facts and figures is sufficient

The guide was highly experienced and informative. He patiently waited for us during free time. The sights were beautiful and worth seeing. I would recommend improvement on the lunch service, no consideration was given to dietary requirements, a set menu was served, also drinks were a chargeable service, even had to pay for water and mint tea.

The guide, Dr Wassim, was excellent, very knowledgeable, informative and interesting. He made the day very enjoyable and good fun. The only downside was the very early start, which could have been avoidable.
