Two-night tour of Faial’s volcano and marina with Atlantic views

  • 3 days + 2 nights
  • 3 meals included
  • Light intensity
  • Hotel
Faial is one of the nine Azores islands, a volcanic dot in the mid-Atlantic where sailors have stopped for centuries on transatlantic crossings. This three-day tour gives you two nights in Horta, the island's capital, and a full day circling Faial by road. You visit the Capelinhos volcano, the Caldeira crater, the painted marina walls and seafood restaurants where the catch arrives that morning. The hotel is built with volcanic stone and frames the Atlantic from wide windows.

Your route

What makes the night special

The hotel sits in Horta overlooking the Atlantic, built from volcanic stone with maritime colours that tie it to the island outside. From your room the view is open ocean, with Pico's volcanic peak rising from the water on the opposite side of the channel. Horta itself is a small port town where the pace drops after dark. Two nights here means you have time to walk the marina at your own speed and sit in the harbour-side cafes after the tour groups have gone. You'll get to see the island in early morning light before the day visitors arrive from other islands.

On arrival at Faial Airport or Horta Port, you'll be met and transferred privately to your hotel in Horta. The rest of the day is yours to settle in, walk the harbour front or sit in one of the port-side cafes. The hotel is a superior-category property (Pousada Forte Horta or similar 4*) with volcanic stone, maritime decor and Atlantic views from the rooms.

Capelinhos volcano, black ash landscape, lighthouse visible. Faial Island. Daylight. People- no.

The guided tour starts at Horta marina, where colourful murals painted by visiting sailors cover the sea walls like an open-air gallery. From there you'll climb Monte da Guia for views across the bay towards Pico's volcanic peak, with an optional visit to the former whaling station museum nearby. The main stop is Capelinhos volcano, where a 1957 eruption expanded the island and left a lunar landscape of black ash. The underground visitor centre tells the story through accounts from locals who lived through it. Lunch is at a seafood restaurant serving the day's fresh catch. In the afternoon, hydrangea-lined roads lead into Faial's green interior and up to the Caldeira crater. If weather allows, you'll walk the rim for panoramic views across the island and the Atlantic. The return passes through peaceful villages and rolling hills.
