What makes the night special
After a full day crossing mountain passes and desert plains, you'll arrive at a Berber haima camp set deep in the Chegaga dunes. The camp sits far from any settlement, so once the sun sets there is nothing but sand, sky and firelight. Dinner is served around the campfire, followed by traditional music and storytelling from your Berber hosts. The silence between songs is quite something, too. Sleeping here, in a traditional tent with the desert night air cooling around you, is the centrepiece of the trip. By morning the light shifts fast across the dunes, turning them from deep orange to pale gold before you have even finished breakfast.

An early start from Marrakech takes you south into the High Atlas Mountains, where the road winds through rugged peaks and traditional Berber villages clinging to the hillsides. The first major stop is Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO World Heritage kasbah that has appeared in films like Gladiator and Babel. Its red-earth towers and narrow alleyways are worth the climb to the top for views across the valley below. After a lunch break, the route continues through the Anti-Atlas Mountains and into the Draa Valley, where the landscape softens into endless rows of date palms. By evening you arrive in Zagora, known as the gateway to the desert, where you'll settle into a hotel for the night.

The morning begins with a visit to Tamgeroute, a small desert town known for its ancient library and traditional pottery workshops where local artisans still shape green-glazed ceramics by hand. From there, you'll continue south to M'Hamid, the last settlement before the Sahara takes over. At M'Hamid you swap your vehicle for a camel and set off across the golden Chegaga dunes as the desert changes colour beneath the setting sun. By evening the haima camp appears between the dunes. Dinner, music and storytelling around the fire round off the night before you fall asleep under a sky full of stars.

After breakfast in the quiet of the desert, the journey continues across the dry lake bed of Iriqui, where vast open flats stretch to every horizon. The route passes through remote Berber settlements and sun-baked scenery before reaching Taznakht, a small town on the northern fringe of the desert known for its carpet-weaving tradition. From Taznakht the road climbs back towards the Atlas Mountains and on to Marrakech, bringing your Sahara adventure to a close.
