Is this overnight experience safe?

Yes. This safari is operated by Pollmans Tours and Safaris Ltd, one of Kenya's established tour operators. You travel with an experienced guide throughout, in a vehicle designed for game viewing in the reserve. Mara Engai Lodge is a well-known property on the Oloololo Escarpment. You're accompanied by professionals at every stage.

What happens to my hotel booking?

You'll skip two nights at your beach hotel. Let your hotel reception know in advance that you'll be away. There's no need to cancel your booking. Just inform them so your room is held. You'll be back by mid-afternoon on day 3.

What is included in the price?

The price covers return flights between Mombasa and the Masai Mara, entrance fees, hotel pick-up and drop-off, two nights at Mara Engai Wilderness Lodge, and all meals. Selected drinks are included with meals. Premium drinks can be purchased on site. Tips are not included. Guests in Kilifi, Watamu or Malindi pay an additional transport supplement at the resort.

What is the best time of year to visit?

The Masai Mara offers year-round wildlife viewing. July to October brings the Great Migration, when huge herds cross the Mara River from the Serengeti. January to February brings green landscapes and newborn animals. The reserve is quieter from November to March.

Do I need to be fit for this experience?

No particular fitness level is needed. You spend most of the time seated in a safari vehicle, and all transfers are vehicle-based. The only walking is within the lodge grounds. You'll need your passport for check-in at the lodge. This safari suits all ages and activity levels.

Mara Engai Lodge sits on the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment, the western wall of the Great Rift Valley. The viewing decks look out over the Mara plains far below, and the lounge areas let you watch wildlife moving across the landscape between game drives. Two nights here means you'll see the reserve shift from afternoon gold to night sounds to early-morning stillness twice over. It's enough time to settle in rather than passing through.

Swap the Kenyan coast for the wide-open plains of the Masai Mara on this unforgettable two-day safari by air. Your day starts at around 6 am with a pickup from your Mombasa hotel, followed by a short transfer to the airport. As you take to the skies, enjoy a scenic flight inland, with Mount Kilimanjaro visible in the distance on clear days. After landing at the Masai Mara airstrip, your guide will be waiting to welcome you, and your first game drive begins immediately as you make your way through the reserve towards Mara Engai Lodge. After checking in and sitting down for lunch, you'll head back out for an afternoon game drive. The Big Five are all here, lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and rhinos, alongside giraffes, zebras and eagles soaring overhead. As evening settles over the savannah, return to the lodge for dinner and your first night on the escarpment.

Wake up to the sounds of the savannah as another day of wildlife spotting begins. An early start takes you out for a morning game drive, when the reserve is at its liveliest and animals are most active. It's one of the best times to spot cheetahs, hyenas and hippos, alongside the famous Big Five. Afterwards, return to the lodge for a well-earned breakfast. The rest of the morning is yours to enjoy at your own pace. Relax on the viewing decks or settle into the lounge areas, where sweeping views across the plains provide plenty of opportunities to watch wildlife from above. After lunch, set off on another afternoon game drive, exploring different parts of the reserve as the changing light transforms the landscape. Round off your second day with dinner back at the lodge before another peaceful night overlooking the Masai Mara.

Make the most of your final moments in the Masai Mara with one last chance to explore the reserve. Your morning begins with a final game drive, offering the opportunity to spot any wildlife you may have missed so far. Afterwards, return to the lodge for breakfast before checking out. A transfer then takes you to the airstrip for your mid-morning flight back to Mombasa, where you’ll arrive at your beach hotel between 2 and 3 pm, depending on your location.

The lodge itself located on the hillside with amazing views over the Masai Mara, the food was great and our accommodation spacious and comfortable.
