The Masai Mara is one of Africa's most iconic wildlife reserves, and this two-day flying safari drops you right into its heart without hours on the road. You'll fly from Mombasa's coastline, land at a bush airstrip and spend the next 48 hours tracking lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos and leopards from a 4x4 Land Cruiser. Your base for the night? Mara Governors Camp, a tented camp tucked into riverine forest along the banks of the Mara River, where the sounds of the African bush surround you after dark and birdsong fills the canopy at dawn.

What makes the night special

Governors Camp sits right on the Mara River, shaded by a thick canopy of riverine forest. After a full afternoon watching predators and herds on the open plains, you'll return to camp for dinner while the bush comes alive around you. The sounds of the African night build into a layered soundtrack as wildlife moves through the riverine forest just beyond your tent. The tented accommodation keeps you connected to these sounds while you sleep. By morning, the reserve is at its most active, and you're already there.

Your day starts early with a pickup from your Mombasa hotel at around 6 am. A short transfer brings you to the airport for a scenic flight over Kenya’s interior. On clear days, you’ll spot the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro from the air. After landing at the Masai Mara airstrip, your driver-guide meets you and the first game drive begins immediately as you head towards Governors Camp. The drive doubles as a wildlife viewing session, so keep your camera ready. After checking in and sitting down for lunch at camp, you head back out for a dedicated afternoon game drive across the reserve’s open plains. This is prime time for spotting lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos and the more elusive leopards. As the light fades, you'll return to camp for dinner and settle in for a night surrounded by the sounds of the Mara River and its resident wildlife.

Before the sun fully rises, you're back in the Land Cruiser for an early-morning game drive. The cool morning light brings out predators and herbivores moving across the plains in large numbers. The Masai Mara is at its most active at this hour, and your driver guide knows exactly where to find the Big Five. After the drive, you'll return to camp to eat breakfast, check out and transfer to the airstrip for a mid-morning flight back to Mombasa. From there, a vehicle takes you back to your beach hotel, arriving around 2 to 3 pm depending on your hotel location.

Game drives follow designated routes within the Maasai Mara National Reserve, and Governors Camp is a well-known, long-running accommodation along the Mara River. You’re accompanied by professionals throughout the trip.

You’ll skip one night at your beach hotel. Let your hotel reception know in advance that you’ll be away for one night. There’s no need to cancel your hotel booking — just inform them so your room is held. You’ll be back at your hotel by mid-afternoon on day 2.

The price covers return flights between Mombasa and the Masai Mara, entrance fees, hotel pick-up and drop-off, and a driver guide throughout. You'll stay one night at Mara Governors Camp with all meals included: lunch and dinner on day 1, breakfast on day 2, plus drinking water. Drinks and tips are not included.

The Masai Mara offers year-round wildlife viewing, but the best months depend on what you want to see. July to October is the Great Migration season, when huge herds cross the Mara River from the Serengeti. January to February brings lush green landscapes and newborn animals. The reserve is less crowded from November to March.

No particular fitness level is needed. You spend most of the time seated in a comfortable 4x4 Land Cruiser, and transfers between camp and the airstrip are vehicle-based. The only walking involved is within Governors Camp itself. This safari suits all ages and activity levels.
