Private trip of Jordan's historic Umayyad castles from Amman

Your journey begins with a pick-up from your hotel in Amman, followed by a drive into the eastern Jordan desert. This region is dotted with 7th and 8th-century castles, many of which are conveniently located within a short drive of each other. These were originally constructed as rural retreats and hunting lodges by the Caliphs of the Umayyad dynasty, the first Muslim rulers of the Arab kingdom. You'll discover intriguing tales about their lavish lifestyles and indulgent behaviours.

After approximately an hour on the road, you'll arrive at Quseir’ Amra, one of east Jordan’s most renowned castles and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Once a hunting palace of the Umayyads, this beautifully restored building boasts 8th-century frescoes depicting scenes of decadence, including nude women, wine, and parties.

Next, you'll visit Qasr Al-Kharanah, a commanding two-level fortress standing alone in a vast plain. Believed to have been built on Roman foundations, this mysterious castle showcases a rich blend of Mesopotamian, Arabic, and Greek architectural influences.

Your journey continues to Qasr Al-Azraq, initially an Umayyad hunting retreat and later used as a headquarters by the Arab Revolt leader more commonly known as Lawrence of Arabia.

Finally, you'll head to the 12th-century Castle of Ajloun, erected during Saladin's reign to defend against Crusader armies. Step inside this partially preserved hilltop fortress and wander through its sprawling corridors and staircases.
