Embark on a half-day cultural and scenic journey to uncover the roots of Arequipaâs signature white stone along the renowned Sillar Route.
Following your hotel pick-up, you'll be whisked away to the awe-inspiring Añashuayco Quarry, situated roughly 45 minutes from the city. This bustling quarry provides an intriguing glimpse into the age-old craft of local stonemasons, who have been moulding volcanic rock for generations. Marvel at the towering canyon walls shaped by sillar extraction and take in a striking large-scale sculpture at the Church of La CompañĂa de JesĂșs. You'll also get the opportunity to engage with craftsmen and even have a go at chiselling a stone block yourself.
Next, venture to the Culebrillas Canyon, a natural ravine sculpted by water erosion over centuries. Delight in a brief and leisurely stroll (approximately 20 minutes) through this slender canyon, flanked by walls reaching up to 20 metres high. Keep an eye out for ancient petroglyphs etched by the Wari culture over a millennium ago as you traverse the site.
Before heading back, take a moment to appreciate the traditional apachetasâpetite stone towers erected as tokens of gratitude towards nature and symbols of good luck. Your journey concludes upon returning to Arequipa city centre, near the Main Square.
