Seven tastings and 150 years of gold rush history fill this walk through two neighbourhoods most visitors never connect on their own. It starts at a takeaway window on the Inner Harbour causeway, where guests eat seafood chowder standing up with the Legislature and the float planes across the water (a South Indian dosa replaces it from October to March, when the window closes for the season).
From there the route moves into Old Town, the brick warehouse district built on 1858 gold rush money, for a guided tasting of oils and balsamics, dark chocolate cream from a chocolatier making the same recipe since the 1880s, and a bakery item that changes with the day of the week. A tuna taco follows at a beer hall inside a restored nineteenth-century market square.
The tour finishes in Chinatown, Canada's oldest, walking beneath carved stone lions to a barbecue pork bun from a counter that has hung its pork the same way for generations.
