Konya is one of Turkey’s oldest continuously lived-in cities, stretching across the open plains of Central Anatolia where ancient trade routes once criss‑crossed. Known for its deep spiritual heritage, Konya was home to the 13th‑century poet and mystic Rumi, whose legacy still lingers in the city’s atmosphere today. Wandering through its stone houses, leafy courtyards and winding lanes, you’ll catch little glimpses of Konya’s old-world character and charm. And the food? It doesn’t disappoint. Tuck into local favourites like etli ekmek – a long, thin flatbread loaded with minced meat or try tirit – a mix of broth-soaked bread, meat and yoghurt. And of course, there’s cay, Turkey’s beloved black tea served in those iconic tulip-shaped glasses.

Top three things to do in Konya:

1. Explore the Mevlana Museum – Rumi’s resting place

The Mevlana Museum is Konya’s most iconic site, dedicated to the life and teachings of the poet and Sufi mystic Rumi. Inside, you’ll find beautifully decorated halls, manuscripts, musical instruments and Rumi’s ornate tomb, which draws visitors from around the world looking to learn about his philosophy of love and unity.

2. Discover the Seljuk masterpieces at the Ince Minare and Karatay Museums

Konya was once the capital of the Seljuk Empire, which thrived from the 11th to the 14th-century, and you can still see that history everywhere you look. The Ince Minare Museum is full of incredibly detailed stone carvings and woodwork, while the Karatay Museum practically glows with its turquoise‑blue tiles and Seljuk-era ceramics that highlight the artistry of the time.

3. Stroll through Alaaddin Hill and its surrounding historic quarter

Alaaddin Hill is a peaceful green space at the heart of the city, perfect for a slow walk among locals enjoying the shade of old trees. Nearby, you can explore the Alaaddin Mosque, browse small shops selling things like fresh spices, traditional sweets and hand-carved wooden goods, and enjoy a glass of cay as you watch daily life unfold around you.
