The universe really knows how to put on a show, and the sandstone landscape of Luxor is one of the best spots in the world to see this headline act. It’s an early start to catch a short flight from the Red Sea resorts of Sharm to the ancient city on the Nile. Tuck into lunch, then take a motorboat to the west bank of the Nile and snap photos of the mighty Colossi of Memnon, who have stood watch over ancient Thebes for thousands of years. The Valley of the Kings is next to explore, where you can enter three royal tombs and learn about the legacy and beliefs of the ancient pharaohs. Head to the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari to wrap up your tour at the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, which was built for one of Egypt’s rare female leaders around 3,500 years ago.
