Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon and Diamond Beach tour

4.4/5
6 reviews

The Jökulsárlón lagoon is a natural wonder of Iceland that produces a feeling of incredible tranquillity and a sight that you must not miss. Watch as 1000-1500 year old icebergs silently drift into the lake and slowly melt away. The lagoon covers 18 square kilometres and reaches more than 248 metres at its deepest point. You may recognize it from scenes in Batman Begins, Tomb Raider and two James Bond movies.

As part of this tour, you will also stop at the gorgeous Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls. Seljalandsfoss is part of the Seljandsá river which has its origins in the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. What makes Seljalandsfoss so famous and interesting is that you can walk behind it. It is recommended that you bring either a raincoat or a waterproof coat along if you want to try this unique experience.

Skógafoss, another famous Icelandic waterfall, is the starting point of the Fimmvörðuháls walk over to Þórsmörk. This waterfall was featured in the films Thor: The Dark World and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. On the way back, you will stop at Vík í Mýrdal where you can have dinner at leisure. While there you can walk to the black sand beach to see the Reynisdrangar rock formations.

What you will see along the way (weather permitting):

  • Volcanoes: Hekla, Eyjafjallajökull, Westman Islands, Katla and Öræfajökull
  • Glaciers: Langjökull, Mýrdalsjökull, Vatnajökull and several glacier snouts
  • Waterfalls: Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Systrafoss, Foss á Síðu and several others
  • Sandy plains: Skógasandur, Sólheimasandur, Mýrdalssandur, Skeiðarársandur and Breiðamerkursandur
  • Coastlines: In Vik, at jökulsá - the diamond beach and view towards south coast in several places
  • Fertile farmland and mossy lava fields

I appreciate this is a very long day (14 hours) but as we passed the famous black beach at Vic a 10 mins stop there would have been good as we literally drove past it. This time could have been removed from the lunch stop as this was a little excessive. Other than that I enjoyed everything. The guide was good the locations were visited were lovely and seeing the northern lights on the way back was an added bonus. Very enjoyable trip.

Great day, frequent stops for meals and toilet breaks. Fantastic guide who was very informative. Sadly we didn’t go to diamond beach as guide suggested there wasn’t any diamonds to see which was disappointing, especially as this is the part we were most looking forward too. Overall, a good day!

The glaciers were beautiful and so was diamond beach . The driver and guides were friendly and engaged really well with the passengers . One the downside the service stops along the way were not really suitable for the amount of passengers . Very limited food and in fact we had nothing hot to eat the whole day due to queues . It would have been lovely to stop at an authentic restaurant and have soup in a roll for example rather than a warm hotdog and having to stand eating it .

I have done this tour before but this time the itinerary had changed and was not as good. It’s a very very long day which is fine but we had two service area stops very close together which wasn’t necessary. We had far less time at Skogafoss which was really disappointing. We also didn’t get to stop and explore the back sand beach at Vik, suspect this was to do with risk. Waterfall stop on way back to Reykjavik was not required. So around 60 min of the tour could be reduced.

The pick up time and location of pick up was very confusing resulting in my family almost missing the trip and another couple of travellers missing it altogether. The paperwork said in bold at the top pick up was fossbaron hotel 7.30 be there 10 mins before pick up but further down it said bsi bus station 7.30. No indication that a transfer bus was used for hotel pick up with pick up time 7am
