Half-day Greek cooking class and Kourouklata village tour

4.1/5
9 reviews

A cooking class in Kefalonia is a great option if you want to take home not just a souvenir, but a true Kefalonian experience. Set off on a culinary journey which brings you closer to the island's culture, traditions and authentic hospitality. Dimitra, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Mrs Stavroula is such an enthusiastic teacher, and a great cook. Her Kefalonian riganada – grilled bread topped with tomatoes, onions and fresh herbs – is one of the best I've ever tasted. It's a dish that celebrates the sun-ripened local produce and the flavours of my island.'

Once you have arrived in the tucked-away village of Kourouklata, you'll be welcomed with Kefalonian delicacies to whet your appetite. The village is famous for its classical houses, coastal views and friendly locals, who'll make you welcome. There's an opportunity to taste local wines and honey, and to find out about the long journey it takes to create these typical island products.

Next, you'll head to the oldest taverna in the village to cook up a storm. Under the guidance of Mrs Stavroula, you'll prepare Greek appetisers like tzatziki and Kefalonian riganada, then roll up your sleeves to make traditional meat pie. While lunch is cooking, take a guided tour of the village. Then it's time to savour the fruits of your labour, accompanied by fine Greek wine. Your journey into the world of Kefalonian cuisine ends with photos, smiles, and you'll get a souvenir recipe scroll, so you can host a Greek night with your friends back home.

The cooking part was a bit haphazard, I think maybe getting lost in translation and the village tour was a walk up a hill

I loved looking around the farm with the lemon trees olive trees herbs chickens etc. It was fascinating. The cookery section was the chef doing a demonstration with us going up to help with bits, so it's not like 'Bake off'. For some bizarre reason that wasn't mentioned on the blurb it also involved going up to St Georges castle on the minibus which was closed. there were lovely views but I wasn't really sure how this fitted in. The lunch was lovely and we went back another day for lunch too

A very enjoyable and unique trip, good to have new experiences available. We had previously met our lovely guide on the Fiscardo evening trip and it was good to meet her again.

It was not a cookery lesson as sold to us. Out of a group of 11 people only 4 were invited to participate with the cooking! My wife was asked to add some water to the pot and stir it for a while. The someone else got to roll out the ready made pastry. No produce was picked for the lesson! All ingredients were prepared before our arrival. A group of 4 of us we paid £220 for the experience. Definitely not value for money.

Advertised as a cooking experience and picking our own food. This was not the case. We did not pick any food and we watched the chef cook the dish. The only involvement was 2 girls being invited to stir the rice in the pot for about 10 seconds - the same 2 girls who had just been handling a tortoise and a cat. We enjoyed it but it was not as advertised and this was the view of others we spoke to

It was a pleasant day though not what we expected. The day started off with a confusion relating to what bus to get on. The guide was lovely and the food tasty. All in all, we paid £60 for a tour around a beautiful farm garden and a basic lunch. Not much of cooking your own meal. Having said that, we enjoyed our day.
