Janjanbureh 2-day tour with overnight stay in a traditional camp

4.3/5
37 omdömen

This two-day journey takes you over 300 km deep into The Gambia, combining historical landmarks, vibrant markets and rich river landscapes with an immersive stay in a traditional riverside camp. From ancient stone circles and colonial forts to wildlife-filled mangrove swamps and local villages, this adventure reveals the cultural and natural diversity of the country in one unforgettable experience.

Your journey begins with an early departure from your hotel as you head towards Banjul and cross the River Gambia by ferry to Barra on the north bank. Your first stop is Fort Bullen, the country’s first anti-slavery fort, where a guided tour brings its powerful history to life. After a short coffee break, continue to the lively Farafenni market, a bustling trading hub filled with local produce and daily activity. From here, the journey continues to the Wassu Stone Circles, the largest concentration of their kind in the world and a UNESCO-recognised archaeological site dating back centuries.

In the afternoon, travel onwards to Kuntaur, where you’ll board a boat for a scenic four-hour cruise along the River Gambia. As you glide through mangrove-lined waterways, lunch is served onboard, and there’s a chance to spot hippos, monkeys and crocodiles along the riverbanks. By evening, you’ll arrive at Jang Jang Burreh Camp, a traditional riverside lodge built in African hut style, where en-suite accommodation and a warm welcome await. The day ends with a folkloric music performance by local villagers as you enjoy dinner under the stars.

Wake up on day two to the sounds of nature and take a morning walk around the camp for birdwatching and wildlife spotting before breakfast. Afterwards, continue to Georgetown, also known locally as Jang Jang Burreh, a key administrative centre in the Central River Division. Here, you’ll gain further insight into local life before continuing your onward journey, bringing your exploration of The Gambia’s history, culture and landscapes to a close.

Wir waren grundsätzlich schon sehr zufrieden. Im Übernachtungscamp gab es am Morgen dann kein Wasser zum Duschen.

River cruise very good, drive back on the 2nd day was long but necessary. The guide sharing his knowledge of Gambia helped to break up the journey.

The trip involves too much road travelling. Also, there were not enough stopping off experiences along the way to break up the journey. The itinerary description was a bit misleading. It leads you to believe the overall journey is around 300km. In reality this is just a one way distance and the full travel is around 600km! We expected the night accommodation to be basic, as part of the experience but it was too basic! On a positive note the guide Mo was very friendly and knowledgeable.

I thought our guide, Mo, was excellent. He knew everything about the area, without being boring. We saw a lot of wildlife.

The overall trip was good, but the accommodation for the evening and hygiene was really quite appalling. I understand the idea is too experience the raw side of life in The Gambia but the small basic lodges were infested with crickets, beetles and other insects. Trying to keep them out of the bed was a nightmare.
