Step inside the Musée de la Vie romantique, one of Paris' most distinctive small museums, with this in-app audio tour. Housed in a private mansion built in 1830 for the Dutch painter Ary Scheffer, it offers an insight into the Romantic movement that spread across Europe in the early 19th century. Inspired by a deep appreciation of nature and a growing sense of individuality, writers such as Byron, Shelley, Walter Scott and Goethe helped shape the ideas that influenced artists of the period.
As you move through the museum, you'll learn about Scheffer's artistic circle, which included notable figures such as Chopin, Liszt, Rossini, George Sand, Charles Dickens, Ivan Turgenev and EugĂšne Delacroix. The mansion became a meeting place where artists, writers and musicians gathered to exchange ideas, share their work and spend time together.
The museum showcases Scheffer's paintings, sculptures and personal objects, while also highlighting two important figures connected to his life and work: the writer George Sand and the scholar Ernest Renan, who was related to Scheffer by marriage. The entire ground floor is dedicated to George Sand, celebrating her literary legacy and popularity in both France and England.
