Le Marais and Jewish heritage guided walking tour

You'll step into one of Paris's oldest neighbourhoods and explore Le Marais, where centuries of culture, religion, architecture and memory intertwine. The tour begins on the banks of the Seine at the Hôtel de Ville, Paris's city hall, where the Liberation of Paris was celebrated in 1944.

Your route takes you past the statue of Étienne Marcel, the 14th-century provost who stood up to royal power, before pausing at the 13 November 2015 memorial garden, dedicated to the victims of the Paris attacks. You'll continue to the Église Saint-Gervais, one of the city's oldest parish churches, whose walls still bear traces of the First World War.

A few steps further, you'll stop at the Mémorial de la Shoah and its Wall of Names, honouring the 76,000 Jews deported from France. You'll hear stories of those who resisted, hid and rebuilt. From there, you'll wander into the Village Saint-Paul, a peaceful maze of courtyards and artisan shops that reveals the hidden side of Parisian life, then admire the Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis Church.

You will continue through the Hôtel de Sully, a jewel of 17th-century architecture, leading you to the Place des Vosges, the oldest planned square in Paris. You'll enter the heart of the Jewish Quarter along Rue des Rosiers, where bakeries, kosher delis and historic synagogues preserve the living heritage of Paris's Jewish community. The tour ends at the Parvis des 260 Enfants, a memorial to the children of the neighbourhood who were deported.
