Authentic Goan Saraswat cooking experience on a local spice farm

Stepping into a new culture and getting a taste of a different life is what travelling is all about. On this enriching Goan adventure, you'll be introduced to members of the Saraswat Brahmin community. While traditionally these families lead private lives rooted in rituals, they're incredibly hospitable. Expect a warm welcome with a local drink at a traditional Kulhagar – a family-run farm.

The owner will take pride in showing you around the farm, explaining how certain spices and herbs are used both in natural medicines and in cooking. It's the later you'll be getting involved in next with a hands-on demo of some of the village's favourite dishes. First up, you'll help prepare a typical Goan hot steamed dessert. Learn how to grind masala on a stone in the traditional way and discover how the spice transforms the flavour of mackerel cooked in hay – a rustic delicacy.

Tuck into the tangy, sweet dish for lunch, all served in handcrafted earthenware crockery – it really adds to the authentic flavour. Then, with a full belly, you'll take in the traditional practice of cashew roasting. Let the rich, smoky aroma flood your senses as you learn about the methods passed down through generations of Goan villagers to perfect these nuts.
