O que esperar
Dramatic landscapes and rugged, volcanic shores come as standard in Tenerife. But little is said about the rich agriculture the island offers. On this tour, you'll journey through the south for a glimpse into the island's culture and identity. You'll see how locally grown bananas go from farm to table, explore the lofty village of Vilaflor de Chasna and sample local wines. Ivan, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Vilaflor was once called Chasna, but when Captain Pedro de Bracamonte visited, he spotted a beautiful Guanche girl. “Vi la flor de Chasna,” he cried – meaning “I've seen the flower of Chasna” – and thereby coined the new name of the village.'
The dry climate and year-round sunshine make the Canaries a perfect place to grow bananas. This fruit is Tenerife's main export, reducing the carbon footprint by supplying the rest of Spain and beyond. We'll find out more on a tour of a local plantation, where you'll learn all about banana cultivation. There'll also be a chance to taste different varieties, as well as try products made from the bananas.
Next, we'll visit Vilaflor. Perched on the southern slope of Mount Teide volcano, the views down to the coast from 1,400 metres above sea level are wonderful. The village has an almost Alpine feel that differs from the tropical coastline – it has the largest pine forest in the Canaries on its doorstep. After a look around the village, we'll enjoy a tour and a tasting at an award-winning family-owned winery.

Full Day Tenerife Tour with La Laguna and Lunch
Dusty and lunar-like in the south, green and mountainous in the north, Tenerife packs a continent into one island. Think quaint villages, stunning views and a local lunch on this full day experience. You'll visit the UNESCO-listed old town of La Laguna, drop into a bodega for lunch and explore an aloe vera plantation. Arianne, one of our local expert guides, says, ‘Canarian bananas are smaller but thicker, and their peel has dark speckles. The pulp is yellower, and it should be eaten riper, which makes it sweeter.'First up is a visit to an aloe vera plantation. Here, you'll learn about the healing qualities – especially skincare – of this crop. Then it's on to La Laguna, arguably the prettiest town on the island. Throw in its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it makes for a real gem of a stop. Wander its poker-straight streets of pastel-coloured palaces and colonial-era churches and convents, or stop for a coffee in one of the cool tree-lined plazas. Taste local products such as marmalade and cheese in the weekly market and admire the town's famous flower displays.It's then on to a family-run bodega for a typical Canarian lunch surrounded by vintage bottles and aged barrels. All ingredients are seasonal and locally sourced to reduce the environmental impact. And it goes without saying that some of the bodega's wines will be served with the food.

Island exploration doesn't get much better than this. On this full day experience, you'll venture into both a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Arianne, one of our local guides, says, ‘I really love this tour because it's an overdose of nature, focusing on the volcanology of the present and the past.' But there's more – there's also the remote village of Taganana, viewpoints and one of the most popular beaches in Tenerife.Leaving your hotel in an eight-seater minivan, you'll head to La Laguna, famed for its pastel-coloured palaces and collection of Mudejar-style chapels, churches and convents. A quarter of the town's structures date from the colonial period up to the 18th century. So rich is its architectural heritage that UNESCO listed it in 1999 because of its authenticity. After free time to explore La Laguna at your own pace, why not mingle with locals at the weekly market?From here, you'll head to the crescent-shaped beach of Las Teresitas, complete with palm trees. The scenery changes dramatically next, as we journey through the laurel forest of Las Mercedes en route to Taganana. This whitewashed hamlet cascades down a slope in Anaga Rural Park. Here, you'll enjoy a lunch made from locally sourced ingredients in a family-run restaurant. The afternoon features a scenic drive through the volcanic Anaga Mountains – a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – stopping at the 360-degree viewpoint at Pico del Inglés and at Cruz del Carmen viewpoint.

A stop at Roques de Garcia allows you to take some pics near these iconic rock formations, with the volcano's cone in the background.Grab a last look at the lava-scarred landscapes at Poleos viewpoint before dropping into a family-run restaurant for a lunch made from seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. Rounding off the day is a visit to Masca – a hard-to-reach hamlet perched on a ridge in a deep volcanic gorge. Enjoy free time to poke around and take in the vistas.
