Milan is more than just a place for fashionistas or football fans – there's a historic side to the city beyond its cool, cosmopolitan and chic exterior. And this tour does just that – you'll see the best and most impressive side of Milan, including the Duomo and Sforza Castle.

You'll travel from Lake Maggiore to the bright lights of Milan, where a day of sightseeing and exploring awaits. Kick off your guided tour of the city at the Monumental Cemetery, home to the mausoleum of the Campari family. Then it's on to Sforza Castle, which houses major works of art.

To end the tour, you'll pass by the spectacular cathedral, the Duomo, and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele shopping arcade. You'll find yourself looking up at its iron-and-glass roof more than the shops. Afterwards, you'll have free time – either make your way to the La Scala opera house museum or indulge in some window shopping in the fashion capital of Italy.

The walking tour guide was very informative but did not point out any toilets the whole time we were with him (circa 3 hours), he assumed the stop on the bus before entering Milan was adequate. 2. The trip to the monumental cemetery on the outskirts of Milan was interesting and not somewhere the independent traveller would likely venture out to, especially not on a day trip.

This was the only trip booked out of three that actually ran. The guide was informative and took us round a good range of sites. It would be good to have a clear rundown of the time that will be spent in different areas in the booking information. It was tricky to hear the guide at times as she was quietly spoken.

La Scala museum entrance fee is not included – it may be possible to view the theatre during your visit to the museum, but this depends on opera rehearsals and is never guaranteed

A nice highlight in the afternoon is to take the lift to the Duomo roof terraces, payable locally
Guests must have a good level of fitness and be able to board coach unaided. Please note there is walking involved (1km each way between the coach/castle and the Duomo)
