This virtual reality tour takes you back to one of the most defining moments in Cologne's history. In a 45-minute immersive experience, you'll explore the city in the aftermath of twelve years of Nazi rule and five years of devastating air raids.
The experience unfolds in three parts and follows a documentary narrative style. It begins with a spoken introduction outside the historic cinema building, followed by a 12-minute film that depicts the bombardment of Cologne and everyday life in the ruined city in 1945.
The core of the journey is a 20–25-minute VR ride through Cologne's destroyed cityscape. Travelling from Neumarkt past the Cathedral to Heumarkt, you'll witness scenes of daily survival – food distribution, early clean-up efforts, displaced residents and people rebuilding life amongst the ruins. A narrative voice guides you throughout.
Along the route, flashbacks reveal glimpses of Cologne before the war. The experience culminates at Heumarkt, where returning citizens cross a temporary bridge back into the city, symbolising resilience and hope. In the final moment, you'll rise above the ruins as present-day Cologne emerges below.
