STARLIGHT EXPRESS tells the wonderful dream of a child, in which the world championship of international trains is held: Steam locomotive Rusty seems to have no chance against the superstars diesel locomotive Greaseball and electric locomotive Electra. A newcomer to the race is Pearl. The beautiful first-class car and Rusty are immediately attracted to each other, yet she agrees to race Electra. Discouraged, Rusty doubts himself and doesn't want to participate anymore. His place is taken by the old steam locomotive engine Mama - and she wins with her last ounce of strength. In the finale, Rusty has to stand in for her and asks the legendary STARLIGHT EXPRESS for help. Can he defeat the seemingly overpowering competitors and win Pearl's heart?
