Forchtenstein Castle, which once served as the “vault” of the Esterházy princes, holds within its walls many things that were dear to the family: portraits of ancestors and famous personalities, precious treasures made by master craftsmen, memorabilia and wonders of nature as well as military equipment from the time of the Turkish wars. The Esterházy Gallery of Ancestors presents one of the largest baroque ancestral portrait galleries in Central Europe. The paintings form part of the collections of Prince Paul I (1635–1713) from the seventeenth century.
