The presence of Jewish communities in Marseille dates back to the Roman Empire, but it became stronger during the Inquisition when Jewish populations from Spain, Portugal and France sought papal protection in Provence. During World War II, many Jews arrived in Marseille in the hope of setting sail for America, and also after the decolonization of Algeria and Tunisia, Jewish populations arrived en masse in France and particularly in Marseille.

Your private driver will pick you up at your hotel or cruise ship port and drive you to the magnificent Synagogue Breteuil and its Wall of Names, the monument dedicated to the 2000 people who were arrested and held in concentration camps during the Nazi occupation.
