Head to the famous Alcatraz Island in the middle of the bay, a former location of the civil war fort, a military prison, and a federal maximum-security prison that welcomes visitors from all over the world as a National Historic Landmark.

Get a chance to explore the outdoor part of Alcatraz Island and learn its history, how the prison operated, how officers and prisoners lived, and many other stories that are generally not a part of your daily life. Start this self-guided audio tour at Pier 33, where you will board the ferry to go to the island.
