Self-guided walking audio tour of the old San Juan

Start by downloading the Action Tour Guide app, which acts as your personal tour guide, audio guide and map all in one. Your self-guided walking tour begins at the vibrant La Corazón Steps, which are famous for their painted red heart.

Next, head to the Teatro Alejandro Tapia y Rivera, one of the oldest drama theatres in the US and rumoured to be haunted.

After that, explore the colourful, historic seaside neighbourhood of La Perla. You might recognise it from the music video for the hit song "Despacito".

Delve into history with Sir Francis Drake and his attempt to capture the island from the Spanish. Find out how his Spanish opponent, General Sancho, achieved victory despite being significantly outnumbered.

As you continue your stroll, you'll come across ancient walls and old gunpowder stores, which lead up to the magnificent Castillo San Felipe del Morro fortress.

Be sure to visit the Cuartel de Ballaja, which is now home to the Museum of the Americas.

Next on your itinerary is the historic Catedral Basílica Menor de San Juan Bautista, the final resting place of Ponce de León. Learn how the oldest church in the Americas withstood numerous attacks over the centuries, including Dutch invasions and Hurricane Maria.

As your tour comes to a close, wander along charming cobblestone streets towards Puerta de San Juan, the only remaining gate from the old city.

Your tour concludes just beyond La Fortaleza, a majestic fortress dating back to the 1530s!
