Your journey begins with a visit to the fortress of Kuelap, the region's primary archaeological site. This imposing structure, built by the Chachapoyas culture around 500 A.D., features 505 enclosures spread across multiple levels and walls extending over 600 meters. The interior architecture is a testament to its historical significance as a once-inhabited space. Situated at an altitude of 3,000 metres, the fortress is accessed via a modern cable car that takes you to the complex in just 20 minutes.
Following your exploration of the fortress, your next stop is Leymebamba. Here, you'll have the opportunity to admire the Leymebamba Museum, a building designed in harmony with local architectural traditions. The museum is nestled amidst rich and diverse flora, including a garden showcasing over 100 varieties of local orchids. Inside, you'll find more than 2,000 archaeological artefacts from northern Peru and other regions. Among these are 219 remarkably well-preserved mummies, unearthed from the pre-Hispanic Laguna de los Cóndores tombs.
