Wild coastline, clear Adriatic and Ionian waters, and a fascinating military past shape Sazan, Albania's largest island. Lying at the entrance to the Bay of Vlora, the island has long been a strategic outpost and was off-limits to civilians for much of the 20th century. Today, boat trips from Vlora offer a chance to explore its rugged shores, former military installations, and quiet coves. You can spend your time swimming in clear water, exploring abandoned bunkers and tunnels, or combining the island with a trip to nearby Karaburun. Sazan suits you if you like unusual destinations where nature and history come together.

1. Explore Sazan's military past

Sazan's strategic position has made it important to several powers over the centuries, but its most visible legacy comes from its more recent military history. The island was heavily fortified during Albania's communist period, with bunkers, tunnels, military buildings, and other defensive structures scattered across the landscape. Boat trips and guided excursions offer a glimpse into this largely abandoned side of the island.

2. Swim along the island's coastline

Away from the military remains, Sazan has a rugged Mediterranean landscape of rocky shores, secluded coves, and clear blue water. Boat excursions often stop at quieter spots where you can swim and snorkel away from the mainland crowds. The surrounding waters are also home to marine life and underwater landscapes that make the island worth exploring from the sea as well as from land.

3. Combine Sazan with Karaburun

Sazan is often visited as part of a boat trip around the Karaburun Peninsula, creating a full day of coastal exploration. Cruise along the peninsula's limestone cliffs, stop for a swim in secluded bays, and look out for sea caves along the shoreline. The combination of Sazan's military history and Karaburun's wild coastline gives you two very different sides of the Albanian Riviera in one trip.
