Enjoy tales of the Pirate Channel while cruising its waters imagining the legends and swashbuckling action of times gone by. Next, take some time for a blissful swim in the shallow waters of Bacalar, soaking up the vibrant hues of this incredible spot.
Continue your journey to the mystical Cenote Negro, one of the revered underground caverns filled with fresh water that the Mayans loved so much. Then relax amid the tranquillity of Isla Pájaros, a natural haven where you can explore or simply stretch out and enjoy the peace. After lunch in a restaurant, you'll head to San Felipe Fort for a guided visit before setting off back to base.

When you imagine the ancient Mayans peering into mysteriously deep and limpid underground pools, it's easy to see how they came to believe these cenotes were windows to the underworld. Ariel, one of our local guides on this tour, says, ‘Holbox is a habitat for more than 300 endemic and migratory bird species. It's also something of a playground, with activities such as speedboats and beach buggies.'Board your boat at Chiquila – piloted by a local fisherman – and be whisked off on a two-hour coastal tour. Every other company uses the local ferry. Your guide will point out places known for their wildlife – some 150 bird species have been spotted on the island – and explain what efforts are being made to preserve this habitat. For three decades, Holbox has been part of Yum Balam Nature Reserve.
