You'll kick things off by exploring Rethymno, a Venetian must-see that's one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Greece. This pretty town is a photographer's paradise, so make sure your camera is ready, especially when you're around the old harbour and the imposing Fortezza citadel. This place was built in the 1500s to help defend the island against invasions by the Ottoman Empire, so there's loads of history to soak up. Afterwards, spend two hours wandering through Rethymno's narrow, winding alleys, where you'll find loads of funky shops that sell souvenirs and local fare.
After soaking in all that Rethymno has to offer, you'll carry on with a visit to Lake Kournas, the only natural freshwater lake in Crete. This spot is known for its laidback atmosphere, and the locals often come here to unwind and take in Crete's natural side. Take your time to relax by the lake, where you can treat yourself to an ice-cream or a coffee from one of the lakeside cafes. If you're feeling more adventurous, you can also rent a pedalo here and head out on the water.
