Description

Head to the famous Alcatraz Island in the middle of the bay, a former location of the civil war fort, a military prison, and a federal maximum-security prison that welcomes visitors from all over the world as a National Historic Landmark.

Get a chance to explore the outdoor part of Alcatraz Island and learn its history, how the prison operated, how officers and prisoners lived, and many other stories that are generally not a part of your daily life. Start this self-guided audio tour at Pier 33, where you will board the ferry to go to the island. During a 15-minute ferry ride, listen to the brief history of Alcatraz, enjoy the view of the Golden Gate Bridge, and get to know what Treasure Island is about.

When you reach Alcatraz, walk around the island, exploring its most popular sites. See the building used by officers for social gatherings and the ruins of the mansion where the wanders held parties. Find out who the prisoners were and how they spent their time and whether the first escape attempt was successful.
