Something of a rags to riches story, the Palmetum in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a place you need to see to believe. Once a rubbish dump, this now 12-hectare botanical garden is blossoming with one of the greatest collections of tropical palms in Europe as well as plants from all over the world.
Plant lovers will be in their element as you stroll around the Palmetum. Over 400 species of palms alone have been planted around the gardens, all set out by geographical area. And you'll find many of them are from islands, including the Caribbean, Madagascar and Polynesia.
Stroll around this sprawling tropical paradise, where waterfalls, streams and volcanic rockeries can be found among the never-ending list of plants. You'll also be treated to views over the sea and city as you climb the hill – a reminder you're right in the middle of a bustling city.
