Zanzibar Jozani Forest, cave, and village adventure private tour

4.2/5
2 bedømmelser

Spooks, spirits and ancient arts combine on this trip to the heart of Zanzibar culture. In Muyuni Village, you’ll quickly understand the importance of tradition to the locals. They’ll introduce you to the art of rope making, basket weaving and makuti plating. Get to know the community at the village school, then visit the mystical Ngonga Cave where you’ll see a witchcraft healing ceremony and explore the network of passages and tunnels with your guide. Along the way, you’ll discover the history of the cave as a home for vampire bats and the spirits of the Muyuni people’s ancestors.

This private full-day tour takes you also into the island’s only national park to walk along its nature trails and amongst some fascinating wildlife. You’ll arrive at the forest in Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park ready to step foot on territory that’s home to endangered red colobus monkeys, bushbabies, duikers, butterflies, and birds. And once you’ve got your eye trained on the treetops, you’ll be in for a chance of spotting these elusive creatures as you make tracks through the park.

Think more could have been included. We paid extra for private tour but appeared to do less than normal excursion

We really enjoyed this trip and yes we saw the Red Colobus Monkeys. Everything was as described although we didn’t see any rope making, basket weaving or makuti plating. I also can’t recall hearing anything about a cave with vampire bats although we did visit a cafe. Our guide was excellent, friendly and knowledgeable. There are a few things however the ‘What to expect’ bit doesn’t point out and I really think this should be noted. There is a suggestion that you may like to buy some exercise books for the visit to the school and make a donation. It was also suggested that we buy sweets for the children and that we give some money to a few elderly women in the village as they had no one to care for them. We didn’t mind doing this but I would have liked to have been forewarned. (I struggled a bit with the Tanzanian Shilling and at times wasn’t sure whether I was giving them 3p or £300). There wasn’t really any opportunity to have something to eat although there was a cafe at the Jozani Forest; I think I should have been a little more assertive and asked for time to eat as we were quite hungry by the time we got back to the hotel. Hope that helps.
