Arriving in Matera, you'll be met with the extraordinary sight of cave homes carved into the limestone canyon. From a distance it looks almost like a clay model of a town, but this very real scene is over nine thousand years in the making. On this full-day tour, you'll visit the two UNESCO-listed Sassi districts of Matera. Your guide will show you some of the typical cave homes of early human civilisation, along with their farming methods, tools and furnishings, giving an insight into the lives and traditions of our ancestors. There's some free time to look around the modern parts of the town, too, for a real contrast.
